Winsome cafe

Los Angeles, CA

Winsome Cafe is located in the central plaza of Playa District, LA’s newly blooming tech hub. It is a sister location to the Echo Park Winsome restaurant by entrepreneurs Marc Rose and Med Abrous. The location at Playa District provides a casual, comfortable dining experience to tenants and visitors alike, featuring a menu full of California contemporary plates. The goal in designing the interior was to create an environment that was a beacon of light within the larger campus. Sunny yellows and accents of warm jewel tones celebrate the surrounding California landscape and year-round summer weather. Much like the other amenity spaces at Playa District, the threshold between interior and exterior is completely flexible allowing for the restaurant atmosphere to seamlessly blend from inside the dining room to the exterior terrace.

This isn’t the first restaurant for owners, Marc Rose and Med Abrous. Their other successful restaurants include Genghis Cohen and the Spare Room both located in the Hollywood area of Los Angeles. Their goal with Winsome is to cater to the casual crowds of the Playa District office park offering an eclectic and contemporary dishes for breakfast and lunch.

PLAYA DISTRICT

Los Angeles, CA

Playa District is a hub of activity located a short distance away from LAX. The campus consists of 5 buildings and is split between a North and South Campus. The South Campus is centered around a large open plaza with a range of landscaping and amenities while the North Campus is a more secluded retreat away from the busy central hub. Our goal in upgrading each of the lobby spaces was to create a hospitality like atmosphere that adapts to different programing for each location. We maintained a campus wide design language in order to unify the North and South locations.  This common design thread connects each lobby and creates a seamless and cohesive experience while maintaining the unique identity and programming inherent to each individual space.

SOUTH CAMPUS: the HUB - 6080 LOBBY

Located at the center of the Playa District campus, the lobby at 6080 quite literally acts as the hub of activity and interaction. With the adjacent parking lot there is a constant flow of foot traffic. 6080 is typically the first stop for visitors and often a moment that tenants from other buildings pass by several times each day. The plaza between 6080 and 6100 hosts a variety of events from weekly farmers markets to live performances. 6080 is the backdrop to all events on campus and a place where people can stop in to work, eat, socialize or relax. We designed the interior of this lobby and the rest of the campus to be focused around California living. It was important to blur the line between interior and exterior space so the transition from one to the other was completely seamless. The introduction of bi-fold doors allows tenants to enjoy the beautiful, temperate southern California weather nearly all year long.

6080 Lobby LR rchs-playa2-1075.jpg
LA_PlayaDistrict_Lifestyle_0190.jpg

The main goal was to change the traditional open lobby from a stagnant space to one that was activated throughout the day. The variety of seating options allows guests and visitors to grab coffee and work remotely at the bar-top tables, socialize during lunch breaks together or find a place of respite to take 10 minutes away from their busy day. Comfort and versatility were the main focus when space planning and selecting furniture.

SOUTH CAMPUS: the foyer - 6100 LOBBY

Mirrored directly across from The Hub is the Foyer at 6100. This lobby bookends the event plaza and is the location for Pepperdine University’s graduate campus. It was important that 6100 was equally engaged with the plaza while complimenting the material palette of the 6080 space. An open staircase was added to make the connection to the main Pepperdine entry more fluid for visitors. We extended the stair to allow for amphitheater seating which students can use for informal work sessions or quiet study groups. The material selection and addition of lighting and furniture is more controlled and subdued compared to it’s 6080 neighbor in order to offer a calm and comfortable environment for all students and guests.

NORTH CAMPUS: the terrace - 6060 LOBBY

Located at the farthest end of the campus on the North side, the 6060 lobby is a lot more quiet and secluded. The main challenge of this space was its lack of activity and connectivity to the outdoors. The existing interior architecture was rigid and symmetrical and lacked the layered atmosphere that the client was looking for. We needed to find a way to program the lobby so it felt purposeful, but could also maintain its presence and not feel empty when it wasn’t being occupied.

Playa District_J Sanidad_5783_LR.jpg

We unified both sides of the symmetrical room with a similar material palette but programmed each side differently in order to break up the relentless symmetry. The large banquette clearly defines one side of the room and acts as the main anchor point to the space. The wall with undulating wood paneling unites both sides of the lobby while bringing warmth and movement into the space. We added a hand painted wallcovering from Porter Teleo as a backdrop tot he reception desk. Similar materials can are seen throughout the campus applied in different ways in order to create a subtle relationship between each lobby.

6080_Interior.jpg

Embracing the Southern Californian Lifestyle, we are blurring the lines between interior and exterior environments. The introduction of large, glass garage doors allows us to bring the outdoors inside and indoor elements outside.  We are using furniture from local LA designer, Stephen Kenn throughout the campus. We are specifying the same line with different finishes depending on if they are interior or exterior. We are using rugs from GAN which are typically used outdoors and bringing them inside. Exterior grade table lamps and floor lamps add an additional layer of hospitality to the entire campus.

PLAYA DISTRICT Amenities

Los Angeles, CA

The Playa District Amenity spaces consist of Equity’s main office space along with a variety of open rooms that cater to the tenants throughout the campus. RCH consulted with designers from Industrious in order to create several themed rooms for various events and occasions. Tenants will be able to rent these spaces for company events, marketing and product launches, networking mixers and social gatherings. These rooms will act as an extension of each tenant space allowing for the most flexible and efficient use of shared space.

PLAYA DISTRICT cafe

Los Angeles, CA

RCH worked with Equity Office Development to create a casual dining experience located in the heart of the Playa District campus. The cafe will provide a variety of fresh dishes and drinks for breakfast, lunch and dinner to the tenants of the campus along with the general public. The cafe is positioned on the south west corner of the 6080 building adjacent to the extensive exterior landscape upgrades. The connection to the exterior creates a uniquely Californian dining experience which is characteristic of the concepts throughout the lobbies of each building on campus.

lawrence J. Ellison Institute for transformative medicine of usc

Los Angeles, CA

The Lawrence J. Ellison Institute of Transformative Medicine of USC is a visionary institution combining cancer research and treatment under one roof. The interdisciplinary approach creates an environment that fosters innovation related to the advancement of the fight against cancer. In designing the multi-level facility, RIOS worked with members of the USC team as well as the primary donor Larry Ellison to develop an environment that encourages peace, healing, hope and discovery.

Planning & Programming

Each level was assigned a different sub-material palette representing either earth, forest or sky. The subtle gradient not only creates a warm hospitality atmosphere, usually not found in medical facilities, but a helpful way to navigate through the building. It was important to create a relaxing space for visitors and patients to help foster health and healing.

Several amenities were integrated into the floor plan for the main gathering level on the 3rd floor. This level is connected to a terrace that runs lengthwise along both the north and south elevations, creating a unique opportunity to blend interior and exterior programming.

Moments of Discovery

In designing the interior architecture, the RIOS team wanted to disrupt the threshold dividing the research labs and public spaces. Pockets of saturated color & texture were carved out of the space between the two programs, filled with a curated selection of art, sculptures and interactive displays. This immersive environment encourages employees and visitors to pause their daily routine and observe their surroundings. The sensory nodes also provide a connection between the employees and the public, connecting visitors to the exciting and complex world of cancer research and development.

The confidential client is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company specializing in the research and treatment of various forms of cancer. The main focus of the company is on the development of engineered T-Cell immunotherapy.  The success of the company has lead to the need for more space to grow their administrative departments at the Santa Monica Headquarters campus location.

Rios Clementi Hale Studios was brought on to design and plan for the extension of their Headquarters location into a 5 level, 120,000 SF space at the Colorado Center business park in Santa Monica, CA.

The majority of the workplace interior consists of private office space with about 30% assigned workstations in an open office layout. Each level requires a high level of circulation efficiency in order to maximize the floor plate and allow for as much program as possible. At each main circulation intersection an amenity "pocket park" space is introduced in order to create a social point for employees to recharge with refreshments & coffee or have impromptu meetings. A larger cafe is planned on Level 3 along with a large "living room" lounge area for casual meetings on Level 4. Each level has 2 exterior terraces that are furnished with a variety furniture types from interior lounge spaces to work tables for outdoor meetings.

The main architectural feature is the introduction of a monolithic sculpted stair connecting levels 2-5. The addition of a secondary circulation path allows for a visual connection between levels while creating new way for employees to move from floor to floor.  Employee connectivity through circulation and amenity lounge spaces is the main focus of the design in order to create a balance between focused work space and active social hubs.
